On June 4th, the Prendergast Dad’s Club held its 1st Annual Dodgeball Tournament at Prendergast School. The purpose of the tournament was to raise funds for a new playground at the school. $1,800 was raised through entrance fees and a raffle. Prendergast School teachers formed 2 teams, Dad’s Club Members Rich Rivera, Mike Shortell, President Saleh Hanaif and Assistant Principal Joe Apicella each formed their own teams with friends and family. Also, members of the Ansonia Fire Department Charter Hose competed in the event.
The winning team, B.T.W. consisted of Prendergast staff of Bob Powers, Tina Vermiglio, Liz Nimons, Scott Penna, Ansonia High School Teacher Jeff Rotteck and teammate Marc Cingo. B.T.W. faced the “Halligans’ from Charter Hose Fire Department. Playing for the Halligans was firefighters David Godfrey, Chris Godfrey, Matt Godfrey, Alex Smith, Justin Collins, John Machowski III, and team captain Tony Spigardo.
The idea for the fundraiser came from Dad’s Club President Saleh Hanaif, who thought that the tournament would be a great way to help raise money and also have members of the community interact in a fun way. “This tournament was great. The last time that I played dodgeball was when I was in Junior High,” said Dad’s Club Member Mike Shortell, “This was a great way to earn some money for the school.”
The highlight of the event was when President of the Valley Community Foundation, James Cohen joined the event to present the Dad’s Club with a grant of $1,000 to be used to build a new playground. “I cannot thank the Valley Community Foundation enough. They have been so supportive of this school and our needs. I would also like to thank all of our raffle sponsors and volunteers who helped make this day run smoothly, “said Prendergast Principal Larry DiPalma.
